Installing BellSouth Internet Service ADSL with an Alcatel modem and Bridged Service

  1. Install the NIC.
  2. Load the NIC drivers. (from floppy, CD, etc.).
  3. Reboot if prompted.
  4. On your open the Network Properties dialog box. (from Control Panel select Network or right click Network Neighborhood on your desktop and select properties)
  5. Select the TCP/IP that’s connected toyour network card and click Properties. (picture)
  6. Select the “IP Address” tab and select “Obtain an IP address automatically”. (picture)
  7. Select the “WINS Configuration” tab and select “Disable WINS Resolution”. (picture)
  8. Select the “Gateway” tab and remove any gateways installed. (picture)
  9. Select the “DNS Configuration” tab and select “Disable DNS”. (picture)
  10. Select the “Advanced” tab and check “Set this protocol to be the default protocol”. (picture)
  11. Select the “Bindings” tab and uncheck “File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks” as well as “Client for Microsoft Networks”. You will need “Microsoft Family Login” or something else to bind to TCP/IP, otherwise you’ll get an error. (picture)
  12. The remaining tab “NetBIOS” does not matter here. (picture)
  13. Click “OK” and “OK” again and Windows will prompt you to reboot. Reboot.
  14. Click “Start”, “Run”, and type “winipcfg” and Click “OK”
  15. Select your Network Card in the top box. If you are re-installing the same NIC you should see a valid IP address. (not 0.0.0.0 or 169.xxx.xxx.xxx) If the IP address is not valid, Click “Release” and then “Renew”. You should now have a valid IP address.
  16. If you you are installing a new NIC, you will need to write down your “Adapter Address” or MAC address and call the Help Desk. They will also need your user ID and city. Once they delete the old address and register the new address you should be able to get a valid IP address. Check it before you hang up. Also note that if you leave the winipcfg program open for an extended period of time it WILL stop responding. You’ll then have to hit ctrl-alt-delete and end the task.
  17. Once you have a valid IP address, open Internet Explorer. Click on “Tools” and then “Internet Options”. (Netscape user go to the Control Panel and Double Click on “Internet Options”.
  18. On the Connections tab select “Never Dial A Connection”.
  19. Click the LAN Settings button and UNcheck the “Automatically detect settings” box.
  20. Surf!
